Road Trip 2012

The Pattillo family has been looking forward to our summer road trip since March when we started making plans. Well, now it has finally arrived and as I sit writing this post, I'm surrounded by trees and wildlife that live on Daufuskie Island. Tim is out for a run and soon we'll be preparing to make another trip to the beach. Life is good; vacation is good!

Here are a few highlights of our trip so far.

On our drive from Dallas to Vicksburg Thursday we saw a gorgeous full rainbow. Then the next day on the drive from Vicksburg to Atlanta we saw another. This was a nice distraction as we drove through many hours heading southeast.

In Atlanta, we were lucky enough to spend some time with Tim's friends and even my good friend from McMurry, Amy. (I really wanted a picture of Amy, but we were having such a good time catching up that I forgot to get one!) Dave was our gracious host and invited everyone to his house for a cook out. We also visited Stone Mountain and took in a few sites in Atlanta.

After some baseball at Dave's and checking out Stone Mountain, we headed into the big city. We stopped by the house where Tim's grandmother lived for a snapshot and drove through Sweet Auburn to see MLK's church and birth house.

Back in Tucker, Tim posed for picture in front of the old Pattillo homestead on Carthage Road. I can only imagine how busy this house used to be.

On Sunday we got up and headed to Hilton Head, South Carolina, to catch our ferry to Daufuskie Island. We drove around the island, checked out our blue cottage, and played on the beach. Benjamin had a blast!

Yesterday we did a bit more exploring on the island and took a couple of trips to the beach. All of our traveling here is done in a golf cart down some paved roads, a few dirt roads, and even a few narrow trails through the woods. We are reading our travel brochures to learn a bit more about the history of Daufuskie Island. It is a pretty amazing place.

Today is our last full day here. We will be heading to Savannah in the morning. This means we have to get up and catch the 8:15 ferry back to Hilton Head.

For now, we plan to spend some more time at the beach today and maybe try out a restaurant or two. (There are only three on the island...I think.)
